Dr Simon Sweetnam BDS MFDS MSC
Dr Simon Sweetnam is an enthusiastic and passionate dentist who has a strong interest in implant and restorative dentistry.
He has attended numerous advanced training courses in many aspects of dentistry to facilitate him to deliver world class care in a friendly and compassionate manner. This allows Simon to engage with each patient as a person and not just a set of teeth.
SERVICES
Periodontal care
The area of dentistry focused on deep cleaning and any surgery necessary to maintain good gum health and to stop periodontal disease progressing. Without this care teeth can become progressively loose and be lost.
Endodontics
This is the area of dentistry that involves root canal treatment. This is needed when decay has got into the nerve of the tooth. Nickel titanium instruments are used to clean and shape the canal system before the space is filled up. This should be a comfortable procedure and can last anything from 1-3 hours.
Routine Exams
Ideally every 6 months you will have you teeth and gums examined along with a cancer screen and any necessary x-rays. The idea is early detection which leads to minimally invasive dentistry which is often more straight forward and cost effective than allowing small problems become big problems.
Composite Restorations
When dental decay is detected it needs to be removed. Once this is the done the resultant cavity can be restored with composite resin to give a beautiful natural white restoration that mimics nature.
Dental Implants
The gold standard in replacing missing teeth. With the aid of a CBCT scan, 3D visualisation allows careful planning prior to surgical placement of a titanium implant which will support a lifelike artificial tooth. Painless procedure that is carried out under local anaesthetic.
Oral Surgery
A general term that covers any surgical procedure in the mouth. This may involve the removal of broken down roots or impacted wisdom teeth that require some minor incisions and stitches. Also covers crown lengthening and frenectomies.
Orthodontics
Dr. Sweetnam straightens misaligned or crooked teeth with clear aligners. These are invisible and treatment time can be as low as 3 months. Suitable for the majority of patient and used routinely for patients who had braces as a child but relapsed due to lack of retention, the teeth have moved again.
Crown and Bridges
This is the use of ceramic materials (Emax and zirconia) to restore single teeth or spaces to a natural aesthetic form. Involves minor preparation of the tooth/teeth involved. A crown is needs when a natural tooth is broken down and helps protect it aswell as restoring a natural look.
Tooth Whitening
A simple and effective technique when done correctly. This lightens the colour of the tooth and can undo many years of aging and remove stains. Gives almost any smile and fresher and more healthy glow.
Veneers
Veneers are a ceramic (usually feldspathic porcelain or Emax), covering that is bonded to the front of the tooth to alter colour, shape and/or angulation. Does require some minimal preparation of the natural tooth.
Biography
While working within the hospital system, Simon maintained his presence in private practice in Highstreet Medical Dental in Kent and at Crosbie Dental, on the highly acclaimed Wimpole Street.
He also used this year as an opportunity to complete a series of exams that culminated in membership of the Royal College of Surgeons Glasgow.
Following a year in the hospital system Simon returned to private practice full time while also furthering his implant dentistry skills further by attending the Cambridge Dental Academy for a further one year post graduate course in surgical and prosthetic implantology.
Simon now splits his time between general dental practice with an interest in implants and cosmetic dentistry and visiting other dental practices where he lectures on how to communicate clearly and more effectively with patients.
Simon graduated from University College Cork in 2013 and won multiple awards as an undergraduate.
Following this he moved to London and completed his foundation training in Kent. Here he developed a strong interest in further education and started to attend post graduate courses covering oral surgery, restorative dentistry and orthodontics. He continues this on an ongoing basis.
Simon then went on to work in the Maxillofacial Surgery Department of the Royal Surrey County Hospital where he developed his oral surgery skills and started getting hands on experience placing dental implants under the guidance of some of the most experienced surgeons in the country.
Through out this time he continued his studies and research to work towards achieving his MSc in Primary Dental Care from the University Of Kent. His research dissertation looked at facial fractures and the surgical management of them.

Dental Communication
Simon has always had a passion for further learning and education and while completing his MSc, in which education was one of his major subejects, he first started teaching others. Clear communication has always been central to ethical and good treatment in dentistry. Simon regularly visits other dental practices lecturing on this topic and helping dentists provide better treatment to happier patients. While doing this Simon has worked with some of the biggest names in the industry and improved the quality of dentistry their practices provide.
